Michael Popson

Wednesday, April 11, 1928Tuesday, October 2, 2018

Michael Popson, 90, a resident of Trucksville and the Isle of Palms, South Carolina, passed into eternal life early Tuesday morning, October 02, 2018, at Roper Hospice Cottage, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

His wife, the love of his life, was the late Matilda J. “Tillie” (Mucha) Popson, who passed away on October 13, 2016. Together, Michael and Tillie shared 65 wonderful years of marriage.

Born on April 11, 1928, in Swoyersville, Michael was the son of the late Andrew and Anna (Adams) Popson. He was raised in Swoyersville, and was a graduate of the former Swoyersville High School, Class of 1946.

A United States Marine Corps veteran, Michael honorably served his country for two years following World War II, receiving his honorable discharge on September 23, 1948. Following his service in the Armed Forces, Michael went on to take courses at Penn State Hazleton Campus, and at the age of 80, went on to attend Penn State Lehman Campus, where he took courses over four semesters.

Prior to his retirement, Michael was employed by the former Bell Telephone Company, Wilkes-Barre, where he worked as a lineman, splicer, and installer throughout his years working there.

Michael was a faithful Catholic and a member of Saint Therese Roman Catholic Church, Shavertown. Additionally, Michael was a longtime member of the Swoyersville American Legion, Andrew Lawrence Post 644, Swoyersville, and a past member of Mill Race Golf Club, Twin Oaks Gold Club, and Emanon Golf Club.

A man of many enjoyments, Michael especially enjoyed golfing, swimming, planting his annual vegetable garden, making his famous pickles, serving as the “MC” for his family’s annual Thanksgiving Gobbler Games at his daughter’s home in Virginia Beach, visiting his son’s home in Isle of Palms, watching NASCAR, and rooting for his favorite football teams, Navy, the Penn State Nittany Lions, and Old Miss.

Michael will be best remembered as being a loving and supportive husband, father and grandfather. Although his presence will be deeply missed, there is much comfort in knowing that he has been reunited in heaven with his beloved wife, Tillie, who he missed so very much.

The Popson Family wishes to thank Dr. Lanning Anselmi for the years of excellent care he provided Michael. They would like to also thank his neighbors, fellow parishioners, and friends, especially, Molly Schifano, Dana Buchman, Ted Hopkins, and Dave and Donna Tomaszewski, for always treating him like a member of their own family. To those who cared for Michael in South Carolina, especially, Dr. George Durst; his home health nurses, Kimm DeMichele, Sherita Maple, Erica Craig, and “his sunshine” Kelly Artigues; Dr. Ted Thompson and the staff at Roper Hospital; and the nurses and staff at Roper Hospice Cottage, the family thanks all of you for the outstanding care you provided Michael during his time of need.

In addition to his parents, Andrew and Anna Popson, and his wife, Tillie, Michael was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert, Joseph, George, John and Andrew Popson; and his sisters, Anna Popson, Helena Convery, and Elizabeth Zwolinski.

Michael is survived by his children, Michael Popson and Andrea Molino, Kingston Twp.; Kevin Popson and his wife, Sean, Isle of Palms, South Carolina; and Sharon Popson, Virginia Beach, Virginia; his grandchildren, Lieutenant Commander Lacey Popson and Commander Chris “Half” Nelson; Maura Shaul and her husband, Jesse; Macauley Popson; and Lauren Popson; his brother-in-law, Joseph Mucha, Swoyersville; and generations of nieces and nephews.
