Benjamin J. Berrini, 93, a resident of Hanover Township, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, May 18, 2014, at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre.
His beloved wife was the late Mary (Adams) Berrini, who passed away on December 24, 1999. Together, Ben and Mary shared 54 wonderful years of marriage.
Born on September 17, 1920, in Wilkes-Barre, Benjamin was the son of the late Vincenzo “James” Berrini and Elizabeth (Flora) Berrini.
Raised in Wilkes-Barre, Ben attended the former Saint Mary’s High School, Wilkes-Barre.
A United States Army Veteran, Ben honorably served his country for over three years during World War II. During his time of service, he was decorated with the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Upon his honorable discharge on January 10, 1946, Ben had attained the rank of Private 1st Class.
Prior to his retirement in 1990, Ben was employed for 43 years as a foreman for the former Triple S Steel Company, Wilkes-Barre.
Following retirement, Ben worked for many years as a funeral assistant and driver for the Wroblewski Funeral Home, Inc., Forty Fort.
A faithful Catholic, Ben was a longtime member of Saint Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, now known as Saint Robert Bellarmine Parish, Wilkes-Barre.
Ben was a life member of the Hanover Township Lions Club where he served as Past-President. He also served as Lieutenant Governor for District 14-W of the Lions Club, from 1991 to 1992. Additionally, Ben was a great supporter of the Northeast Lions Eye Bank, the Beacon Lodge Camp and the Leader Dogs for the Blind program.
In recognition of his outstanding and devoted service to Lionism, Ben was graced with the Lions Club’s second highest award, the Presidential Medal. Additionally, he was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award.
Ben was a member of the Sons and Daughters of Italy, Lodge 1397, Wilkes-Barre; the Italian-American Veterans of Luzerne County; and the AMVETS, Post 59, Hanover Township. Until 2010, Ben served on the Board of Directors for the Hanover Township Ambulance Association.
In addition to his parents, Vincenzo and Elizabeth Berrini, and his wife Mary, Ben was also preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph, Dominic and Vincent Berrini; his sisters, Edith Curcio and Arcille Rallo.
Ben is survived by his son, Benjamin J. Berrini, Jr. and his wife Francine, Plains Township; his granddaughter, Candice Berrini, Plains Township; his sisters, Regina Alesczyk, Plains Township; Irene Pluskey, Wilkes-Barre; and Joan Sura, Wilkes-Barre; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Relatives and Friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral which will be conducted on Thursday, May 22, 2014, at 8:45 AM from the Wroblewski Funeral Home, Inc., 1442 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:30 AM in Saint Robert Bellarmine Parish, 143 West Division Street, Wilkes-Barre, with the Reverend Kevin P. Mulhern, his Pastor, officiating.
Entombment with the Rite of Committal will follow in Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Hanover Township.
Family and Friends are invited to call on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, at the funeral home.
Members of the Lions Club will conduct a Service of Remembrance on Wednesday evening at 7:00 PM.
